Map of our neighborhood (Flores)

Our specific barrio or neighborhood is 8.1 square kilometers or 5 square miles for those who don't use the metric system. The boundaries of Flores are the roads: Portela, Cuenca, Av. Gaona, Av. Tte. Gral. Donato Alvarez, Curapaligüe, Av. Directorio, Av. Carabobo, Av. Castañares, Torres y Tenorio, Av. Riestra, Av. Perito Moreno, Av. Castañares, Lacarra, Av. Tte. Gral. Luis J. Dellepiane.

The latest figures i have is that there are about 150.000 inhabitants (data 2005). I estimate that it is now about 155.000. A bit more women then men. It's about 55% to 45%.

We house a large Korean community in our area. That has to do with tax privileges. Many come here, start a business, make a lot of money and return to Korea. Of course their children being born in Argentina often wish to stay. You see much Korean supermarkets and textile shops. Especially the Korean Supermarkets are easily recognized because they often have the front blue or yellow painted. I should make a picture of it one day to post here for you to see.

Here is the map. I live in Culpina. Where that is? Click on it and find it!

One more image of the Basílica

Found another image of the basílica. this is from the back. On both sides of the church there is a corridor. This is looking to front from one of the 2 named Salala. The other one is called Pescadores. Also added a map to get an impression of the area.

Plaza Flores and Basílica San José de Flores

A few posts ago i mentioned the Plaza Flores which is the main center of our neighborhood and i mentioned the Basílica. I found some pictures from myself. These are from exactly a year ago. The Basílica also has a website for more info. Also the neighborhood has a website which can be found in the Argentinian link section on the right.

The Basílica is opposite of Plaza Flores. In between runs Avenida Rivadavia which is one of the main East-West arteries of the city. I even read somewhere it's the longest avenue in the world. I can't tell for sure now if that is a fact or not.

Barrios (neighbourhoods)

A bit about where i live. We have 47 barrios, or neighborhoods, in Buenos Aires. There is a good website about them and you can click on the various barrios to get more information. You find this here.

I live in Area 36 of that map. I wanted Area 51 but that seems not to exist :P This barrio is called Flores. It was basically added to the city in 1888. It used to be made of country houses of rich people. There are still some but you will have to look for it since nowadays it is a completely different story. Main areas of this barrio are the Plaza Flores, and on it is the Basilica de San José de Flores. I don't have my own photo's available of those two places at this time. What i can give you is a typical image of a street in Flores. This is our own street over there called Culpina.

You see everything together. That is in most of the city the case. High rise next to a normal house. A very well maintained house next to one that almost falls apart. If you come more into the richer neighborhoods it is more organized by type.

More later....
