Diaphragm?

No it's not a diaphragm. It's the Tulip Stairs at the Queens House at Greenwich, UK. Does make a nice picture doesn't it?

The Tulip Stairs and lantern from below; the first centrally unsupported spiral stairs constructed in England. The stairs are supported by a combination of support by cantilever from the walls and each stair resting on the one below.
