Aurora Borealis

This is an amazing picture of the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights.

In short the Aurora is created because highly charged particles in the earths magnetosphere hit atoms in the upper atmosphere. This is often pronounced after a solar flare.

This picture is a winning picture of a BBC contest for best picture of 2006. The maker of the picture is Max Pickering.
