El Servicio Meteorológico Nacional emitió un alerta por tormentas y granizo para la Ciudad y alrededores. Desde Metrovías informaron a Clarín.com que están interrumpidas las líneas C, D y H. La A y B funcionan de manera reducida. El jueves se produjo un récord de temperatura para el mes de noviembre.

Luego de tres días de intenso calor, cerca de las 17 se desató una fuerte tormenta sobre la Ciudad y sus alrededores, que provocó inundaciones y problemas en los servicios.

El Servicio Meteorológico Nacional emitió un alerta de tormentas y granizo para Capital y alrededores. Según confirmaron en Metrovías a Clarín.com las líneas de Subte C, D y H están interrumpidas. La B sólo funciona entre la estación Los Incas y Medrano. También funciona de manera reducida la línea A.

Además de las complicaciones en el tránsito, comenzaron a inundarse distintas barrios de la Ciudad. Hay calles anegadas en Palermo, Nuñez, Belgrano, Constitución, Boedo y La Boca. "En La Boca hay calles con 40 centímetros de agua pero no hay evacuados", dijo el director de Defensa Civil de la Ciudad, Daniel Russo.

La tormenta se produce luego de que el pasado jueves la sensación térmica superó los 40 grados, un record histórico para esta época del año.

La térmica llegó a 40,1 grados y marcó un récord para noviembre

Según el Servicio Meteorológico, "hace 53 años" que no llegaba a ese nivel en Capital. La agobiante ola de calor continuará esta noche y mañana. Recién comenzará a cambiar el viernes a la noche. Hay cortes de luz y de agua en distintos puntos de la Ciudad y el Conurbano.

La sensación térmica llegó hoy a 40,1 grados en Capital Federal, marca récord para noviembre, en el marco de una ola de calor que seguirá hasta mañana según las previsiones y provocó falta de agua y cortes de luz, con protestas de vecinos tanto en barrios porteños como en el conurbano bonaerense.

"La ola de calor va a durar por lo menos hasta el viernes por la noche, pero la situación cambiará el sábado a la madrugada, cuando un sistema frontal frío hará descender considerablemente la temperatura, fenómeno que podría estar acompañado por lluvias", dijoJorge Leguizamón, difusor de turno del Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN).

El meteorólogo explicó que la sensación térmica registrada hoy en Buenos Aires, 40,1 grados a las 16, es "récord" para noviembre, ya que "hace 53 años que no se registran marcas térmicas tan elevadas" en la ciudad.

En medio de la ola de calor, se multiplicaron las quejas de vecinos de Capital Federal y el Gran Buenos Aires por cortes de energía eléctrica, que las empresas concesionarias reconocen como "puntuales", consecuencia del aumento del consumo por la utilización de ventiladores y aires acondicionados para paliar las altas temperaturas.

Los mayores inconvenientes por falta de luz se registraron en los barrios porteños de Palermo, Barracas, Balvanera, Flores y Floresta, donde se llegaron a denunciar cortes de hasta 24 horas, y en la zona sur y oeste del conurbano bonaerense.

En Córdoba, la temperatura máxima llegó hoy a 40 grados, con registros de sensación térmica de hasta 43, fenómeno climático que obligó a la Empresa Provincial de Energía (EPEC) a realizar cortes de luz "preventivos" en barrios de la capital.

Desde el martes se registran inconvenientes en el suministro de energía eléctrica debido, principalmente, a la alta demanda por parte de los usuarios y a la mayor venta de aires acondicionados.

La ola de calor produjo situaciones curiosas, como que la temperatura fuera similar en Mar del Plata y en Ushuaia, provincia de Tierra del Fuego, con registros de 23 grados.

Desde la medianoche, la Argentina tiene dos horarios
Apenas once provincias adelantaron anoche una hora sus relojes, mientras que otras trece decidieron mantener el huso horario; el cambio se extenderá hasta el 14 de marzo

Desde la medianoche de hoy, apenas diez provincias y la Capital Federal se unieron a la iniciativa del Gobierno y adelantaron sus relojes 60 minutos, al entrar en vigencia el cambio del huso horario en el marco del plan de uso racional de la energía.

El nuevo huso horario, que sigue la hora del este, estará vigente hasta la medianoche del sábado 14 de marzo próximo.

De esta manera, el país quedó partido en dos horarios, con los consiguientes trastornos que ello provoca.

El cambio de la hora oficial en los once distritos se estableció a través del decreto 1693 publicado el jueves en el Boletín Oficial. La polémica suscitada obligó a la Presidenta a un nuevo decreto.

En él, el Gobierno exceptuó del cambio horario a las provincias de Catamarca, La Rioja, Mendoza, Salta, San Juan, San Luis, La Pampa, Neuquén, Río Negro, Chubut, Santa Cruz, Tierra del Fuego, Antártida e Islas del Atlántico Sur.

Por su parte, las autoridades jujeñas decidieron a última hora mantener también el huso horario original.

Razones. Al fundamentar el cambio de hora, el gobierno tomó en cuenta una evaluación realizada en mayo pasado por la Compañía Administradora del Mercado Mayorista Eléctrico (CAMMESA), en el que se recomienda "la conveniencia de la aplicación del Huso Horario dos horas al Oeste del meridiano de Greenwich, durante el período estival".

El 21 de septiembre en la República Argentina: festejos y salidas

Aunque es verdad que cada día tiene su encanto, también es cierto que, en ocasiones, algunos de estos “días” son especiales, esto ocurre con el día de la primavera. Debemos acordar que el 21 de Septiembre (en Argentina) no es un día más en nuestra ordinaria vida, por algo en particular, cuando esta fecha se acerca nos empezamos a sentir diferentes. Los hombres suelen ver la vida con un mayor optimismo despreocupándose por los bienes materiales, el trabajo, las cuentas a pagar; las mujeres son las que más importancia le otorgan al día de la primavera. Según ellas, es el “día del amor”, los sentimientos se manifiestan a flor de piel, y son muchas más las probabilidades de conseguir pareja a partir de esta fecha. Los que piensan que este día es sólo un invento comercial o un “separador” de estaciones, suelen tomarlo como un día más del año, aunque creemos que en el fondo sus sentimientos cambian.

La historia

Hasta el día de hoy no muchos sitios de Internet fueron capaces de explicar correctamente los orígenes del día de la primavera, nosotros nos proponemos hacerlo, remontándonos hacia la mitología griega. Este día tiene sus orígenes en esta cultura europea, la mitología explica los fenómenos climáticos involucrando a dos Diosas Griegas; la leyenda de Homero dice que Démeter, Diosa de la naturaleza y esposa de Zeus, tuvo una hija llamada Perséfone. Hades, Dios de las tinieblas, sucumbió a los encantos de esta última y no pasó mucho tiempo hasta que se la llevó con él a su mundo subterráneo. Démeter decide abandonar el Olimpo y sus obligaciones para buscar a su hija, lo que tuvo una consecuencia muy grande sobre la tierra, la misma se volvió fría y desolada. Zeus no estaba indiferente a la angustia de su mujer, al ver la tristeza de su mujer que no podía recuperar a su hija decide hacer un pacto con hades; el mismo decía que Perséfone pasaría la mitad del año con su esposo y la otra mitad con su madre.

La leyenda cuenta que tanto el verano como la primavera surgen a partir de la alegría que tiene Démeter de reencontrarse con su hija. Esta es una de las explicaciones abstractas del día de la primavera y su correspondiente celebración; los agnósticos seguirán pensando seguramente que las estaciones del año se caracterizan por un simple fenómeno climático, mientras que los más soñadores conservarán esta historia.

Características del día de la primavera en la Argentina

En el primer párrafo adelantamos alguno de los aspectos que envuelve esta fecha tan especial; pero ¿Por qué se despierta la pasión y se alegra el alma?, aunque nos parezca mentira, a la mitad de la humanidad le cambia el humor, este día por, más extraño que parezca encierra muchos misterios que no pueden ser respondidos únicamente con fundamentos científicos. Los expertos afirman que la sincronización del alma se lleva a cabo cuando el Sol se acerca a la Tierra y, junto con el cambio que se origina en la naturaleza, el ser humano siente que renace.

Cuando se pregunta por qué la gente muestra un alto grado de esperanza, celebración y optimismo, debemos decir que el mismo dependerá de cómo se elija vivir este día; algunos creen en el mito del día de la primavera, otros sólo dicen que es un día el cual señala que una estación caracterizada por brindar días “agradables” ha comenzado. El término “primavera” asegura que estamos hablando de una “primera vista” de algo; y su simbología hace referencia a ver con nuevos ojos, rever y renacer. Como conclusión podemos decir que la humanidad adoptó el día de la primavera como una oportunidad de cambio, de encontrar la felicidad; para muchas personas, cada 21 de Septiembre el mundo florece, la gente se vuelve menos distante, y se sienten aires de esperanza.
Otro de los cambios que suelen darse a partir de esta fecha tan especial, son los hormonales, y no nos referimos sólo a los hombres, sino también a las mujeres. Ambos empiezan a tener la necesidad de relacionarse más íntimamente de lo habitual, por eso se dice que esta estación es una “estación hormonal”. E este período también brotan las ideas y las revoluciones, por ejemplo, durante la Primavera de Praga, en Abril de 1968, centenares de estudiantes y trabajadores hicieron que el Comité Central del Partido Comunista Checo aprobara un programa de acción social.

El origen de Aerolíneas Argentinas, bajo ese nombre, hay que buscarlo allá lejos, a fines de 1950. Desde su creación, la mayor línea aérea de la Argentina –y línea de Bandera- fue transformándose de a poco en uno de los orgullos nacionales. Pero su época de éxito y crecimiento sostenido tuvo su final en los noventa, en plena ola de privatizaciones.

A partir de ese momento, llegaron las promesas incumplidas, los cambios de dueño, la cancelación de rutas, la pérdida de activos (venta de aviones, sedes, oficinas, reducción de personal) y el caos constante –demoras, cancelaciones, reprogramaciones- para los pasajeros. También la crisis de 2001 y los atentados en Estados Unidos hicieron su aporte a la debacle.

Día del Niño: Argentina y Uruguay - 10 de Agosto de 2008

"El día del niño" es un día dedicado a los niños, en el que no sólo se trata de festejarlos, sino además de promover sus derechos y concientizar a las personas de la importancia de estos.

Origen

La idea de festejar el “día del niño” surgió el 20 de noviembre de 1959, cuando la Asamblea General de la ONU tuvo una reunión en la que decidió reafirmar los derechos de los niños universalmente.

Desde entonces, cada país cuenta con un día para celebrar y organizar actividades para ayudar a desarrollar el bienestar de los pequeños en todo el planeta.

En muchos países varía la fecha de la celebración, pero es hasta el 20 de noviembre cuando se celebra mundialmente. En Argentina y Uruguay, el día del niño es celebrado el segundo domingo de agosto (salvo excepciones donde se celebra el tercer domingo de agosto).

El día del niño en otros países de Latinoamérica:

Colombia: Último sábado de abril.

Bolivia: 12 de abril.

México: 30 de abril.

Paraguay: 31 de mayo.

Venezuela: Tercer domingo de junio.

Argentina, Uruguay y Chile: segundo domingo de agosto.

Perú: Tercer domingo de agosto.

Brasil : 12 de octubre.

El día 20 de Noviembre ha quedado institucionalizado en España como Día Internacional de los Derechos del Niño, o Día Universal de la Infancia (Administración Central), o Día de la Infancia en Andalucía... en definitiva, como una jornada de reflexión en torno a los problemas de la infancia de todos los lugares del mundo, siempre dirigido a fomentar un interés mayor de la ciudadanía y de los propios menores en la educación, la formación de valores, la protección, y la promoción de los derechos de niños y niñas. Con suerte desigual este día se viene celebrando en España de modo oficial desde 1.995.

Aunque para muchas personas resulte sólo una oda al consumismo, la historia detrás del Día del Niño tiene un origen muy bien definido.

En 1954 la Asamblea General de la ONU aprobó una resolución por a través de la cual se establecería el "Día Universal del Niño" con el fin de promover anualmente un día consagrado a la fraternidad y entendimiento entre los niños y niñas del mundo entero. El organismo encargado para desarrollar ese proyecto fue la UNICEF.

Desde entonces, son más de cien los países que celebran la fecha, a pesar de que la fecha estipulada varía de acuerdo al lugar.

En Venezuela corresponde al tercer domingo de julio, mes que por demás coincide con el inicio de las vacaciones escolares y que permite una disposición total de los infantes a esta celebración en vista de que tienen más tiempo libre.

Por lo general, se organizan una serie de actividades culturales y de entretenimiento y expresión artística, además de distribución de juguetes entre las poblaciones más necesitadas, aunque el propósito vaya mucho más lejos.

El día del niño es una oportunidad para llamar la atención de los entes gubernamentales en lo que se refiere a las necesidades infantiles y de los padres para que estén el tanto de lo que pueden exigir.

Igualmente, se busca informar a los niños para que ellos sepan cuándo son víctimas de algún abuso o si no están recibiendo lo que por derecho les corresponde: educación, vivienda y una alimentación sana, entre otras cosas.

Es importante señalar que estos derechos les pertenecen sin excepción de ningún tipo a todos los miembros de la población infantil que en Venezuela aumenta considerablemente cada año.

El Día del Niño es entonces un deber de los padres y un derecho de los más pequeños quienes a través de este estímulo y del reconocimiento de su valor como forjadores de un futuro no muy lejano, serán capaces de ofrecer a los demás, armonía y amor por las demás generaciones y una labor con muchos frutos.

Asaltan a otro colectivero, mientras se mantiene el paro nocturno en reclamo de mayor seguridad:

Dos hombres asaltaron anoche al chofer y a dos pasajeros de un interno de la empresa Ruta Bus, en Pilar. El hecho tuvo lugar minutos antes de que se iniciara la tercera noche de paro del sector en Capital y el Conurbano, luego del crimen de un colectivero de la línea 96.

Mientras anoche se cumplió con la tercera jornada consecutiva de paro de colectivos en Capital y Gran Buenos Aires en reclamo de seguridad, minutos antes de que se iniciara la medida de fuerza un chofer de la línea Ruta Bus de Pilar fue asaltado por dos ladrones.

El colectivero de Pilar fue asaltado por dos supuestos pasajeros que se llevaron dinero y todas sus pertenencias así como las de otros dos pasajeros, informaron fuentes policiales a Clarín.com.

El hecho ocurrió anoche, alrededor de las 21, cuando Marcelo Fabián Resca conducía el colectivo interno 62 de la empresa "Ruta Bus" entre la estación de Pilar y el barrio Carabaza. Al llegar a la estación de trenes de Pilar, subieron dos pasajeros, uno de los cuales estaba armado. Los asaltantes les quitaron las pertenencias al chofer y a otros dos pasajeros, agregaron las fuentes. No hubo heridos.

En tanto ayer, por tercera noche consecutiva, no hubo colectivos en Capital y Gran Buenos Aires. La medida del gremio UTA, tomada tras el asesinato de un colectivero y a la que también se plegaron los subtes, podría repetirse esta noche.

El servicio estuvo paralizado entre las 22 y las 4. Los subtes, en tanto, salieron de sus terminales por última vez a las 21.30. Este mismo panorama se había vivido en las noches del sábado y el domingo, aunque el paro entonces se extendió hasta las 5.

Ayer, luego de una reunión entre los dirigentes de la UTA y funcionarios del Gobierno bonaerense en La Plata el titular del gremio Roberto Fernández ratificó la continuidad del paro "en forma preventiva ante el pedido de mayor seguridad para los choferes y usuarios de colectivos".

El gremialista dijo que el paro "es una medida de precaución que está condicionada a recibir mayor protección policial". Fernández calificó como "positiva" la reunión con el ministro de Seguridad bonaerense, Carlos Stornelli, y anunció que para mejorar la seguridad en el recorrido de las líneas de transporte se conformó una comisión donde, además de los integrantes de la seguridad provincial, están representados el gremio y los empresarios.

Día del Amigo

El Día Internacional del Amigo es una celebración ecuménica, que nació de la inquietud de un pensador argentino, el Dr. Enrique E. Febbraro, que sentía que era necesario una celebración de las virtudes más altas del ser humano.

En el año 1968, la carrera por alcanzar el sueño de la conquista del espacio llegaría en pocos meses más a su punto culminante, pues hacía tiempo que el hombre había comenzado a derribar barreras e iba produciéndose un acercamiento universal.

Este vertiginoso afán por trasponer las fronteras de la tierra y llegar a los confines del universo hacía que los hombres necesitaran cada vez más acercarse hacia otros hombres de ideologías, credos o razas diferentes, para lograr objetivos comunes (¡siempre es más fácil hacerlo en equipo!).

El objetivo concreto era llegar a la luna, y muchas personas tomaron conciencia de que la unión con sus semejantes los ayudaría a lograr más rápidamente el objetivo, ya que esta conquista había acaparado la atención y el interés de todos los seres humanos.

Este trabajo de los hombres unidos para conseguir la meta deseada, fue la fuente inspiradora de una persona que se encontraba en algún rincón del mundo, más precisamente en un lugar llamado Lomas de Zamora, en la República Argentina: Enrique Febbraro, Doctor en Odontología, Profesor de Historia y Ética, no quiso dejar de honrar este esfuerzo de la humanidad toda, ya que el hombre estaba construyendo una alianza sin fronteras y comenzaría a establecer vínculos de amistad entre todos los seres de la tierra.

Para concretar su homenaje, solicitó la colaboración de algunos amigos y personas cercanas a su pensamiento, y formó un equipo que trabajó durante un año sobre esta idea, bajo un concepto innovador: "Mi amigo es mi maestro, mi discípulo y mi condiscípulo. Él me enseña, yo le enseño. Ambos aprendemos y juntos vamos recorriendo el camino de la vida, creciendo. Sólo el que te ama te ayuda a crecer". Fue así que, como corolario de su tarea, instituyó el 20 de Julio de 1969 como el "Día Internacional del Amigo", en coincidencia con la llegada del hombre a la luna.

A partir de allí comienza un largo peregrinar del grupo de Dr. Febbraro, para difundir la idea y lograr el consenso necesario para celebrar el Día del Amigo. Su tarea se llevaba a cabo con un lema: "UN PUEBLO DE AMIGOS ES UNA NACION IMBATIBLE", y destacaban que sería una celebración ética, sin fines de lucro ni de fomento al consumo.

¿Cómo se hace un amigo? ¿Dónde se lo encuentra? El profesor comentaba que en cualquier parte: en el bar, en la oficina, en otra ciudad, en aquel país, a la vuelta de la esquina, a través de Internet, viajando, entre los animales y las plantas, o en el mundo de las ideas. Sólo hace falta alguna disposición a amar, a escuchar, a comprender, a abrirse al otro, a dar, a sentir placer de compartir su dicha y de acompañarlo en su pena.
¿Cómo se conoce al amigo? "Es fácil, porque no se lo ve, se lo siente", decía nuestro amigo Febbraro. También apuntó que "Mi amigo es mi maestro, mi discípulo y mi condiscípulo. El me enseña, yo le enseño.

Buscó también a otras personas para popularizar su iniciativa. De esta manera se encuentra con Mirta Lancillotta Duarte, de la Provincia de Mendoza, Argentina, quien el 20 de Julio de 1988, funda el Banco Mundial de la Amistad, que se extiende actualmente por 82 países. La señora Duarte ha recibido numerosos premios y distinciones a nivel nacional e internacional, como continuadora de la obra emprendida por el Dr. Febbraro.

En países como Chile el día del amigo se festeja en otras fechas, en este caso en octubre.

Mi Buenos Aires Querible

Existen espacios y edificios que hacen a la identidad de Buenos Aires. Encontrarlos y responder curiosas preguntas es la premisa de este entretenimiento que apunta a que vecinos y turistas se acerquen al patrimonio porteño, a través de un divertido juego de preguntas y respuestas que están estrechamente relacionadas con aquellos sitios tradicionales e históricos que son herencia de la Ciudad.

Para la primera edición, que se desarrollará el sábado 19 y domingo 20 de julio -ambos días de 10 a 17 hs- fueron seleccionados 500 lugares, entre los que se encuentran bares, templos, museos, instituciones deportivas y educativas, monumentos, centros culturales y parques, distribuidos en los 48 barrios porteños, que formarán parte del programa.

Paralelamente se desarrollarán más de 100 actividades gratuitas: talleres, teatro, visitas guiadas y espectáculos para los más chicos, entre otras.

Cientos de jóvenes recordaron anoche el atentado. “Para cada aniversario surge una nueva pista que termina siendo falsa", dijo Ezequiel Herszage, de Juventud AMIA.

El acto central de repudio al atentado terrorista contra la sede de la AMIA, ocurrido hace 14 años, que provocó la muerte de 85 personas y unos 200 heridos, arrancó con el discurso del titular de la mutual, Guillermo Borger, quien exigió una ruptura de las relaciones con Irán y que se investigue a Carlos Menem y Carlos Corach, entre otros ex funcionarios.

"Ha sido demostrada la participación de Irán y Hezbollah. Hasta cuándo el gobierno va a mantener las relaciones comerciales con Irán", se preguntó Borger durante su discurso. El titular de la Amia, también lanzó duros cuestionamientos contra distintos sectores de la Justicia local. Sobre el fiscal Alberto Nisman, dijo que "seguimos esperando mucho de él". "Hace tiempo que promete respuestas, pero el tiempo pasa y siguen sin aparecer", agregó.

Además, reclamó "una investigación seria y que abarque a todos los involucrados", al referirse a la investigación que lleva adelante el juez Ariel Lijo. "Y a los jueces de la Corte Suprema -dijo- les pedimos que revisen el caso como lo merece, con la máxima responsabilidad".

El acto, que se realizó frente al reconstruido edificio de Pasteur 633, estuvo organizado por AMIA, DAIA y el grupo de Familiares y Amigos de las Víctimas. Estuvieron presentes el ministro de Justicia, Aníbal Fernández, el secretario de Derechos Humanos, Eduardo Luis Duhalde, el jefe de Gobierno, Mauricio Macri, quien se lo vio junto a su vocero y a varios de sus ministros a un costado del escenario, y el embajador de Estados Unidos Earl Anthony Wayne. También se mezclaron entre el público los ex jefes de Gobierno, Aníbal Ibarra y Jorge Telerman.

Otros de los oradores fue Luis Czyzewski, padre de Paola, fallecida en el atentado. Su discurso, quizás el más duro, también hizo hincapié en la actuación de la Justicia. "Es muy importante lo que hizo pero también lo que falta. Está en deuda con los muertos, con los familiares y con el país. Sólo vamos a estar conformes cuando sepamos toda la verdad", dijo sobre Nisman.

Al juez Lijo, le pidió "coraje para investigar" a los ex funcionarios implicados. "Sabemos que va a recibir presiones", admitió. En final de su discurso Czyzewski, el último de los que se pronunciaron esta mañana, se dirigió a la Presidenta, ausente por un acto en la Casa Rosada. "Sentimos que hace más de medio año nada se hizo", lanzó.

Antes, había pasado por el escenario la presidenta de Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, Estela de Carlotto. Entre los discursos, también subieron para cantar Juan Carlos Baglietto y Julia Zenko.

El acto (conducido por Mónica Gutiérrez) comenzó a las 9.53, la hora en que ocurrió el ataque, con el toque de sirenas para recordar a las víctimas. Luego, se leyeron todos los nombres en voz alta. En ese momento, sus fotos casi no dejaban ver los rostros de los presentes, entre los que habían muchos chicos (las escuelas de la red escolar judía decretaron asueto escolar).

En realidad, los actos recordatorios se iniciaron anoche -a las 20- con una jornada organizada por la Mesa de Juventud, frente a la sede de la mutual judía, en el barrio porteño de Once.

"Former White House press secretary Tony Snow -- who once told reporters "I'm a very lucky guy" -- died at the age of 53 early Saturday after a second battle with cancer.

Snow, who had been undergoing chemotherapy treatments for a recurrence of the disease, left his White House job September 14, 2007, and joined CNN in April as a conservative commentator.

President Bush said Saturday that he and first lady Laura Bush were "deeply saddened" by Snow's death.

"The Snow family has lost a beloved husband and father. And America has lost a devoted public servant and a man of character," the president said in a statement.

"It was a joy to watch Tony at the podium each day."

Snow also worked for the first President Bush, who commented Saturday:

"In this case it isn't a press secretary. It isn't a speech writer. It was a dear, valued friend that went on to heaven. ... He won the respect of even those who violently disagree with the president's proposals and policies. For that I think he'll be remembered. He brought a certain civility to this very contentious job."

Snow's successor, White House press secretary Dana Perino, said, "The White House is so deeply saddened by this loss. He was a great friend and colleague and a fantastic press secretary. And his dear family is in our thoughts and prayers."

Republican Rep. John Boehner called Snow "a proud son of Cincinnati," the Ohio city that Boehner represents in Congress and where Snow grew up.

"Churchill said, 'I like a man who grins when he fights,' and that was Tony Snow," Boehner said. "For 35 years, as a writer, broadcaster, and spokesman, he fought fiercely for what he believed in, and he did it with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. His loss is a loss for our country."

In 2007, Chief of Staff Josh Bolten had told senior White House staffers that unless they could commit to staying until Bush leaves office in January 2009, they should leave by Labor Day 2007, so Snow resigned.

In parting comments to reporters at his final White House news conference, Snow said, "I feel great."

He also called the job "the most fun I've ever had."

Snow said he was leaving the White House position to make more money for his family. His White House salary was $168,000, and he said he had taken out a loan so he could take the job. Snow said he was leaving because the loan money ran out.

Snow is survived by his wife, Jill Walker, and three children -- Kendall, Robbie and Kristi.

Snow was first diagnosed with colon cancer in February 2005. His colon was removed, and after six months of treatment, doctors said the cancer was in remission.

A recurrence of the illness was diagnosed 11 months after he began the White House media job. At that time, doctors also discovered that the colon cancer had spread to his liver.

He underwent five weeks of treatment before resuming his daily briefings to the press corps. He was greeted with applause upon his return.

"Not everybody will survive cancer," Snow told the reporters, "but on the other hand, you have got to realize you've got the gift of life, so make the most of it. That is my view, and I'm going to make the most of my time with you."

Perino announced March 27, 2007, that Snow's cancer had recurred, and said doctors had removed a growth from his abdomen the day before.

Bush tapped Snow to replace Scott McClellan in April 2006.

Snow had been an anchor for "Fox News Sunday" and a political analyst for Fox News Channel, which he joined in 1996. He also hosted "The Tony Snow Show" on Fox News Radio.

During the 1990s, he was a regular guest host for Rush Limbaugh's radio program. During that decade he was a writer, correspondent and host of a PBS news special, "The New Militant Center," a regular commentator for National Public Radio and a frequent guest on television news programs.

Snow was known for his candor.

In a November 11, 2005, column, Snow wrote that Bush's "wavering conservatism has become an active concern among Republicans, who wish he would stop cowering under the bed and start fighting back against the likes of Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and Joe Wilson."

"The newly passive George Bush has become something of an embarrassment," Snow's column said.

"I asked him about those comments," the president joked at the time of Snow's appointment. "And he said, 'You should have heard what I said about the other guy.'"

Bush said Snow's long career as a journalist helped him understand "the importance of the relationship between government and those whose job it is to cover the government."

Robert Anthony Snow was born June 1, 1955, in Berea, Kentucky, and was raised in Cincinnati. When he was 17, his mother died of colon cancer at age 38.

After receiving a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Davidson College near Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1977, Snow pursued graduate work in philosophy and economics at the University of Chicago.

He worked as an editorial writer and editor at several newspapers, including The Washington Times and the Detroit News. He wrote a column in Detroit, and later wrote a syndicated column.

Snow joined the administration of Bush's father, George H.W. Bush, in 1991, first as chief speech writer and later as deputy assistant to the president for media affairs.

Snow became a television personality when he launched his news shows on Fox in 1993.

When he returned to work at the White House on April 30, 2007, after the second cancer diagnosis, a usually articulate and loquacious Snow stumbled to find words.

"You never anticipate this stuff," he said. "It just happens."

"I want to thank you all. It really meant the world to me. Anybody who does not not believe that thoughts and prayers make a difference, they're just wrong."

He then prefaced a discussion of his health by saying, "I'm a very lucky guy."

Outside of work, Snow played the guitar, saxophone and flute, and was in a band called Beats Workin' with other Washington professionals.

La perdiz la levantó una chilena, que después de presentarse en el metro de Santiago de Chile en reiteradas oportunidades, fue arrestada por exhibirse en público. Monserrat Morille, tiene 26 años y durante una semana fue la distracción perfecta para los aburridos pasajeros del subte chileno ¿Qué paso que la diversión no fue eterna? Los carabineros se enteraron de las andanzas de Monserrat y la detuvieron, para que no se muestre más por los bajones subterráneos.

Con una campera de cuero negra, unas botas a tono, y ropa fácil de quitar, Monserrat se adueñaba del metro mientras se desvestía al ritmo de la música inexistente. Una vez en ropa interior, hacía algunas figuras en los famosos caños, para después pasar a levantar las propinas de los felices pasajeros.

"Me parece increíble que se destine toda esta seguridad a alguien que no le hace daño a nadie. cuando hay mucha gente que es asaltada en el metro", manifestó la joven a la agencia AFP . "Hasta el momento no ha habido ningún pasajero que se queje", agregó la bailarina.

En 1930 un tranvía cae al Riachuelo

En la madrugada de este día, un tranvía eléctrico que había salido de Temperley con más de sesenta pasajeros se dirigía como cada mañana en dirección a la Capital. El interno de la línea 105 levantaba cada jornada a los trabajadores del Conurbano Sur para dejarlos en la zona industrial que rodeaba el Riachuelo. Para ese entonces, sus aguas ya se habían transformado en un oscuro cauce que recogía los deshechos de las plantas industriales de la zona. El chofer, un italiano de 31 años que realizaba su segundo viaje, conducía un coche repleto y veloz cuando comenzó a cruzar el puente de Barracas, cerca de la calle General Bosch. Este puente se elevaba para dejar pasar a los barcos que navegaban el río y avisaba con una señal para que se detuvieran los vehículos terrestres. Un instante antes, un remolcador había salido transportando una embarcación desde el frigorífico La Negra. El conductor del remolcador avisó al encargado del puente y éste encendió las luces de peligro. Al parecer el chofer del tranvía no vio esas señales y siguió de largo. Cuando percibió la elevación del puente, era tarde: no pudo detener el vehículo (exámenes posteriores determinaron que el mecanismo de frenos era defectuoso). El tranvía cayó al Riachuelo con la mayor parte de los pasajeros, murieron 56 personas y sólo se salvaron cuatro.

Por la baja visibilidad estuvo cortada la 9 y el Puente Rosario-Victoria. Además, Gendarmería realizó tránsito asistido en la Ruta del Mercosur y las autopistas Ezeiza-Cañuelas.

La niebla parece haberse convertido ya en un clásico de las mañanas y volvió a provocarle más de un dolor de cabeza a los automovilistas que circulaba por la Ciudad y varias rutas del país. El problema principal se registra en la ruta 9, que se encuentra cortada. El fenómeno afectó también a las 12 y 14 (conocida como la del Mercosur), el puente Rosario-Victoria, las autopistas Ezeiza-Cañuelas y Buenos Aires-La Plata, donde Gendarmería realizó tránsito asistido. En Ezeiza, en tanto, las demoras fueron de hasta cuatro horas.

"Densos bancos de niebla afectan a las provincias de Misiones, Corrientes, Entre Ríos, Santa Fe, Buenos Aires y sectores aislados de La Pampa y Córdoba", informaba esta mañana Nadia Zyncenko, del Servicio Meteorológico Nacional a Clarín.com.

La meteoróloga precisó que las zonas más afectadas de la Ciudad fueron las cercanas al Río de la Plata, donde la visibilidad estuvo "dramáticamente reducida". El fenómeno se mantuvo así hasta pasadas las 13.30, cuando "el sol calentó la atmósfera y se disipó la niebla", confirmó Ernesto Arriaga, vocero de Vialidad Nacional (DVN).

La disminución de la visibilidad obligó a cerrar en horas de la mañana la Ruta del Mercosur a la altura del complejo Zárate Brazo-Largo. Cerca de las nueve comenzaron a circular los primeros autos y micros detrás del vehículo de Gendarmería. El mismo operativo se realizó en el conducto vial que incluye el puente Rosario-Victoria, y en las autopistas Ezeiza-Cañuelas y la autopista Buenos Aires-La Plata a la altura de Hudson.

Las complicaciones también afectaron a los vuelos internacionales. Desde el aeropuerto de Ezeiza -donde la visibilidad está reducida a 4 kilómetros- informaron a Clarín.com que el principal problema se registró en los arribos. Las demoras mínimas fueron de 30 minutos y, en algunos casos, llegaron hasta las cuatro horas. Además, un vuelo de LAN Argentina que venía de Asunción debió ser desviado al aeropuerto de Montevideo y todavía no tiene hora establecida de llegada a Buenos Aires.

En el Observatorio Central explicaron también a este medio que la reducción de la visibilidad en la Ciudad se registró "sólo por sectores" y se dio por los bancos de niebla que se localizaron en lugares puntuales de la Capital y algunos sectores del Conurbano.

Aunque estuvieron abiertas al tránsito, también hubo problemas para circular en las rutas nacionales 3, 5, 7, 8 y la Panamericana, detalló Arriaga. La situación se normalizó aproximadamente a las 14.

Mientras llueven pronósticos inciertos sobre la hora y fecha del desmoronamiento, el gobernador Daniel Peralta le dijo Clarín.com que es muy probable que la presidenta viaje a El Calafate tras el acto de mañana en Tucumán. También esperan por los turistas de las zonas aledañas y piden mayor frecuencia de vuelos desde las principales capitales del país.

Aunque todavía es solo un rumor, en la zona del Perito Moreno hay expectativa por la posible llegada de la presidenta Cristina Kirchner a la zona. En las últimas horas hubo contactos informales entre dirigentes de la zona y asesores de la Presidenta, según pudo saber Clarín.com. No obstante, voceros de la oficina de prensa de la Casa Rosada aseguraron que "no está previsto ningún viaje dentro de la agenda oficial".

Mañana, la Presidenta viajará a San Miguel de Tucumán en horas del mediodía y para el jueves tiene previsto dos actos en la Casa Rosada, según las fuentes consultadas.

Mientras tanto, la ruptura del glaciar se hace esperar. Como toda gran estrella, que se sabe capaz de brindar un espectáculo único e irresistible, el Perito Moreno decidió aplicar una estrategia digna de una celebridad de Hollywood: tomarse su tiempo, hacerse desear. De su tan anunciada e inminente ruptura aún no hay noticias. Es más, todo parecería indicar que recién se produciría en los próximos días.

"Hoy el glaciar está con el túnel formado, pero se nivelaron las aguas del Brazo Rico y el Canal de los Témpanos por lo que ya no hay más diferencia de altura de agua", le explicó a Clarín el intendente del Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, Carlos Corvalán.

Esto, aclaró Corvalán, significa que "ya no hay erosión" y que el puente deberá caer como consecuencia del "empuje del glaciar". "Este proceso es más lento, por lo que calculamos que recién se va a producir en los próximos días", continuó.

Mientras el puente de hielo formado sobre el témpano se resiste a caer, cada vez son más las personas que se acercan a El Calafate con la intención de presenciar el desmoronamiento del glaciar que como condimento extra, por primera vez en la historia se producirá en invierno.

La demora en el "show del glaciar", que se creía inminente pero que ahora parece posponerse, permite que más gente tenga la oportunidad de llegar a la provincia de Santa Cruz a tiempo para ver el momento exacto en que el puente se venga abajo.

Sucede que el proceso que se inició el viernes pasado tomó a todo el mundo por sorpresa y en temporada baja para el turismo, época en la que sólo un vuelo diario une Buenos Aires con El Calafate.

Corvalán precisó que en los meses invernales lo habitual es que ingresen al Parque unas cuarenta personas por día. Esta cifra se incrementó desde que se supo que el glaciar había iniciado el proceso de ruptura: "El sábado ingresaron 350 personas, el domingo hubo un pico de 1.000 visitas y ayer (lunes) unas 600". En tanto, hoy ya lo ingresaron unas 650 personas.

El Perito Moreno es uno de los glaciares que conforma el Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, que tiene una extensión de 17 mil hectáreas y es considerada una de las reservas de agua potable más importante del mundo. Su frente tiene 5 kilómetros de ancho y más de 60 metros de alto sobre el nivel del mar.

Independencia Argentina es el nombre con el que se recuerda la Declaración de la Independencia de las entonces Provincias Unidas en Sudamérica, proclamada el 9 de julio de 1816 mediante un Congreso reunido en la ciudad de San Miguel de Tucumán, en la casa que era propiedad de Francisca Bazán de Laguna, que fue declarada Monumento Histórico Nacional en 1941.

En 1814, el rey Fernando VII, regresaba al trono de España. Esta situación le quitó argumentos de acción a los hombres que habían iniciado la Revolución de Mayo e instaurado la Primera Junta. Ya no podían actuar en nombre del rey de España porque éste volvía a estar en el poder efectivo. España quería reconquistar sus colonias. Los realistas (los partidarios del colonialismo) habían triunfado en Sipe-Sipe, Guaqui, Vilcapugio y Ayohuma y eran fuertes en el Alto Perú. Desde allí pensaban atacar las bases de patriotas ya entonces al mando de José de San Martín e invadir todo el territorio de Argentina teniendo como objetivo la ciudad de Buenos Aires.

El 15 de abril de 1815, una revolución terminó con el gobierno unitario de Carlos María de Alvear. Los revolucionarios exigieron la convocatoria de un Congreso General Constituyente. Inicialmente se enviaron diputados de todas las provincias iniciando las sesiones el 24 de marzo de 1816. Cada delegado representaba 15.000 habitantes.

Varios territorios que habían pertenecido al Virreinato del Río de la Plata no pudieron hacer llegar sus representantes: algunos por haber recaído ante los realistas, otros por estar acometidos por la invasión lusobrasileña. Todas las provincias de la Liga Federal (Banda Oriental, Corrientes, Entre Ríos, Misiones y Santa Fe) intentaron allegar a sus representantes pero estos fueron aprisionados por los agentes del Directorio unitario instalado en Buenos Aires, sólo por su situación estratégica y por la habilidad de sus diplomáticos una sola provincia con gobierno federalista logró hacer llegar sus representantes: Córdoba la cual, aunque no logró hacer triunfar las ideas federales, sí representó el ideario preconizado por José Gervasio Artigas. En cuanto a Paraguay, tal territorio se declaró independiente (tras haber estado confederado) ante las actitudes hipercentralistas del Directorio establecido en la ciudad Buenos Aires, en cuanto a los territorios de la Patagonia, Comahue y el Gran Chaco se encontraban bajo el dominio de los llamados pueblos originarios. El Congreso se inició con la presencia de 33 diputados.

Es de notar que, pese a una hegemonía de representantes de todas las provincias con signo "unitario" el Congreso de San Miguel de Tucumán expresó en gran parte intenciones federales mantenidas por José de San Martín, Manuel Belgrano y Bernardo de Monteagudo entre otros de sus principales realizadores, sin embargo la situación de guerra abierta con la monarquía española y la creciente injerencia del Reino Unido de Portugal, Brasil y Algarve hizo que, tácticamente, muchos de los que podían tener simpatías por el federalismo, decidieran abroquelarse monolíticamente en una especie de "unitarismo" coyuntural ante los ataques externos.

Por otra parte, el Congreso del 9 de julio de 1816, aunque no logró (dadas las circunstancias que exigían un abroquelado) hacer prevalecer un sistema federal (y de este modo una Constitución), reivindicó la casi totalidad de lo declarado en el llamado Congreso de Oriente reunido a pedido por José Gervasio Artigas en Arroyo de la China durante abril e instituido el 29 de junio de 1815, entre otras cruciales intenciones que se establecieron en el Arroyo de la China, en el Congreso de Tucumán se proclamó la declaración de independencia argentina respecto de España y (tras una semana) de toda otra dominación extranjera.

Según la decisión de los propios delegados, la presidencia del Congreso era rotativa y cambiaba cada mes. Este cuerpo, tenía además, la facultad de intervenir en casi todos los asuntos que se presentaban a su consideración. Esto provocó interminables debates.

La votación finalmente se concretó el 9 de julio. En ese momento presidía el cuerpo, el representante de San Juan, Francisco Narciso de Laprida. Ningún país reconoció, en ese momento, la independencia nacional. Las discusiones posteriores giraron en torno de la forma de gobierno que debía adoptarse para el nuevo Estado.

Las labores del Congreso continuaron en Buenos Aires, donde comenzó a deliberar en 1817.

Tras la batalla de Cepeda (1 de febrero de 1820), que marcó la profundización de las divisiones entre unitarios y federales, el Congreso se disolvió.

Aclamaron primeramente llenos de santo ardor de la justicia, y uno a uno reiteraron sucesivamente su unánime y espontáneo decidido voto por la independencia del país, fixando en su vitual la declaración siguiente:

Nos los representantes de las Provincias Unidas en Sud América, reunidos en congreso general, invocando al Eterno que preside el universo, en nombre y por la autoridad de los pueblos que representamos, protextando al Cielo, a las naciones y hombres todos del globo la justicia que regla nuestros votos: declaramos solemnemente a la faz de la tierra, que es voluntad unánime e indubitable de estas Provincias romper los violentos vínculos que los ligaban a los reyes de España, recuparar los derechos de que fueron despojados, e investirse del alto carácter de una nación libre e independiente del rey Fernando séptimo, sus sucesores y metrópoli. Quedan en consecuencia de hecho y de derecho con amplio y pleno poder para darse las formas que exija la justicia, e impere el cúmulo de sus actuales circunstancias. Todas y cada una de ellas así lo publican, declaran y ratifican comprometiéndose por nuestro medio al cumplimiento y sostén de esta su voluntad bajo el seguro y garantía de sus vidas haberes y fama. Comuníquese a quienes corresponda para su publicación. Y en obsequio del respeto que se debe a las naciones, detállense en un manifiesto los gravísimos fundamentos impulsivos de esta solemne declaración. Dada en la sala de sesiones, firmada de nuestra mano, sellada con el sello del Congreso y refrendada por nuestros diputados secretarios.

El 19 de julio, en sesión secreta, el diputado Medrano hizo aprobar una modificación a la fórmula del juramento. Donde decía «independiente del rey Fernando VII, sus sucesores y metrópoli», se añadió: «y toda otra dominación extranjera»

The Independence of Argentina was declared on July 9, 1816 by the Congress of Tucumán.

The May Revolution of 1810 followed the deposition of the Spanish king Fernando VII by Napoleon. The revolution terminated the authority of the Viceroyalty of the River Plate and replaced it with the Primera Junta.

When the king returned in 1814, Spain was determined to recover control over its colonies in the Americas. The royals were victorious at the battles of Sipe-Sipe, Guaqui, Vilcapugio and Ayohuma, in what had been the Viceroyalty of Peru. From there they planned to attack the bases of José de San Martín, and to make their way to Buenos Aires.

On April 15, 1815, a revolution ended the mandate of Carlos María de Alvear and demanded that a General Congress be summoned. Delegate deputies, each representing 15,000 inhabitants, were sent from all the provinces to the sessions, which started on March 24, 1816. However, several territories that had until then belonged to the Viceroyalty of the River Plate did not send delegates: the Banda Oriental ("Eastern Bank", today Uruguay), which was faithful to José Gervasio Artigas; Paraguay, which had already proclaimed its independence; and the Gran Chaco, still fighting the aboriginal resistance.

The congress was inaugurated in the city of Tucumán, with 33 deputies. The presidency of the congress would be rotated monthly. Because the congress had the freedom to choose topics to debate, endless discussions ensued.

The voting finally ended on July 9 with a declaration of independence. The president of the Congress at the time was Francisco Narciso de Laprida, delegate from San Juan Province. Subsequent discussions centered on what form of government the emerging state should adopt.

The congress continued its work in Buenos Aires in 1817, but it dissolved in 1820 after the Battle of Cepeda, which deepened the differences between the Unitarian Party and the Federales Argentina.

The house where the declaration was adopted has been rebuilt and is now a museum and monument: the House of Tucumán.

La carga de los granaderos a caballo...

Un poco historia de la Revolución de Mayo aquí.

Festejos por el 198° aniversario de la Revolución de Mayo en la Capital:

A pesar del viento y de la baja temperatura, los festejos por el 198º aniversario de la Revolución de Mayo en distintos puntos de la ciudad tuvieron una amplia convocatoria.

Miles de personas asistieron ayer a la apertura de la Exposición "Hacia el Bicentenario", organizada por el Ejército Argentino. El evento, que comenzó a las 11 y se extendió hasta las 17, tuvo lugar en el Campo Argentino de Polo, en el barrio porteño de Palermo, con la presencia del jefe del Estado Mayor de esa fuerza, Roberto Bendini.

El día gris y frío no amedrentó a las familias, que aprovecharon la ocasión para disfrutar del mate y los bizcochos mientras observaban el espectáculo: desde granaderos realizando una carga de caballería hasta bailarines de tango formaron parte del festejo, que sirvió como inauguración de la exposición.

Durante el mediodía, la Cuarta Brigada Aérea de Córdoba ofreció una muestra de paracaidismo. Este evento estuvo a punto de suspenderse ya que las condiciones climáticas habían impedido el ensayo previo durante la mañana.

Los más entusiasmados fueron los chicos. "Lo mejor fueron esos soldados que se tiraban desde el cielo", contó Lucía Piedra Buena, de 8 años, que ayer, por primera vez, asistió a un festejo público de esta fecha patria.

Además, también hicieron demostraciones el Regimiento de Infantería I y el Grupo de Artillería.

Afuera, también los más chicos eran los principales clientes de los puestos que vendían banderas a la salida del campo de polo. "Yo quiero una grande, grande, como la que hay en el cole", contó Demian, de 6 años, que presenció la exposición acompañado de sus padres y su hermano.

Con las tribunas llenas, desde las 15 se pudo apreciar la exposición de las unidades históricas, con canto, baile y mucho color. Hubo desfiles de vestuarios históricos, piezas de tango y danzas folclóricas.

"Todos los años participamos de este festejo -contó Alfredo Páez-. Y este año más que nunca tenemos que defender nuestra patria, para dejar de lado tantas divisiones."

La exposición del Ejército se extenderá hasta mañana, con entrada libre y gratuita.

"Tal como había pronosticado el Servicio Meteorológico, esta noche se registraron precipitaciones en Capital. Por la tarde, la sensación térmica superó los 31 grados en la ciudad de Buenos Aires y el Conurbano.

Luego de 21 días, la lluvia volvió a besar a la ciudad de Buenos Aires. Fue luego de una jornada de verano en pleno otoño, que esta tarde mostró una sensación térmica de 31º6.

Paro sorpresivo

Un colapso en el transporte porteño:

"La medida comenzó a las 7 por una interna gremial y duró casi tres horas. Los pasajeros se volcaron de lleno a los colectivos, lo que saturó el servicio. Además, se incrementó significativamente la cantidad de autos particulares y el tránsito se volvió un caos en la ciudad.

El paro que esta mañana paralizó cinco líneas de subterráneos durante tres horas se levantó. La sorpresiva medida de fuerza, producto de una interna gremial, provocó caos en la Ciudad. Miles de pasajeros se quedaron sin su medio de transporte habitual y debieron buscar alternativas para viajar: los servicios de colectivos se saturaron y el tránsito colapsó. La situación se normalizó cerca de las 11.

El paro se levantó a las 10. El ministerio de Trabajo y la Secretaría de Transportes anunciaron que los trabajadores de los subtes levantaron la medida de fuerza luego de que el sindicato Unión Tranviarios Automotor (UTA) suspendiera las elecciones internas que habían motivado la protesta.

El paro generó múltiples complicaciones para viajar. Es que la medida de fuerza abarcó a las líneas A, B, C, D y E. La única que funcionó todo el tiempo fue la H, que va de Caseros a Once.

Los pasajeros que llegaron esta mañana a las estaciones de subterráneos se encontraron con una sorpresa. Desde las 7, no había servicios en las líneas A, que va de Primera Junta a Plaza de Mayo; la C, que une Constitución y Retiro y la D, que va de Congreso de Tucumán a Catedral.

Las líneas B, que va de Los Incas a Leandro N. Alem y la E, que une Plaza de los Virreyes con Bolívar, se sumaron a la protesta más tarde, cerca de las 8. De este modo, en pleno horario pico, el servicio de subterráneos quedó paralizado .

Así, de golpe, los usuarios se vieron obligados a buscar transportes alternativos para viajar. Pero esta tarea no fue fácil: los colectivos no daban abasto y el tránsito quedó muy cargado .

Un portavoz de Metrovías, empresa concesionaria, explicó que el servicio se interrumpió por "un conflicto gremial interno que enfrenta a trabajadores de la UTA con una comisión de delegados de los subtes, donde la empresa es ajena a la medida".

Por su parte, los trabajadores de los subterráneos explicaron que el paro se inició a raíz de un conflicto interno. Según señalaron, los empleados adheridos a la Unión Tranviarios Automotor (UTA) denunciaron a un sector sindical de maniobras ilegales en la elección de delegados y de provocar agresiones.

Los delegados acusaron a "un sector de la UTA" que convocó a elecciones en el gremio "sin haberlas anunciado diez días antes para permitir que todo el mundo se presente" para cubrir los cargos y los acusaron de haber "agredido físicamente" a compañeros, y que concurrieron "armados".

En tanto, el delegado de la línea B Claudio Dellacarbonara le dijo al canal Todo Noticias que cuando los empleados fueron a trabajar se encontraron en la cabecera "a un grupo de personas armadas con actitudes agresivas que por la fuerza intentan generar división con una elección fraudulenta de delegados".

Aseguró que esas personas son "miembros de la UTA que trabajan en connivencia con la empresa Metrovías" y que con sus presuntas actitudes agresivas "no permiten que se garantice la seguridad de los trabajadores", por lo cual decidieron el paro.

El delegado dijo que "entendemos la indignación de la gente, pero el paro no está dirigido a los pasajeros, que también se perjudican porque viajan como ganado en treners que no están en condiciones y no reciben mantenimiento".

Problemas en trenes y colectivos

Las líneas de trenes que unen el Norte y Oeste del conurbano con el centro de la Ciudad quedaron colapsadas por el sorpresivo paro de todas las líneas de subtes, que obligó a la gente a buscar líneas alternativas.

Los pasajeros, indignados por la sorpresiva, huelga también intentaron abordar colectivos en las distintas estaciones terminales, donde había largas colas."

(ENGLISH): Today a strike in the subway system had Buenos Aires residents and commuters search for alternative transport. As u can imagine most want to take the bus which swamped the whole system. I've been in a cramped bus and it's like a tuna can. The door can barely close behind u. No fun. Alternative is the taxi but for a lot of people that is often too expensive.

La calle Bartolomé Mitre será reabierta en pocas semanas

El jefe de Gobierno porteño, Mauricio Macri quiere reabrir la calle Bartolomé Mitre al tránsito. Ahora este calle está cerrado desde la tragedia de Cromañón e Diciembre de 2004.

El diario Clárin dice:

"El jefe de Gobierno porteño afirmó que "la mayoría" de los familiares de las víctimas de la tragedia de Cromañón "está de acuerdo" con la medida. El tramo entre Ecuador y Jean Jaures lleva cerrado más de tres años, desde la noche en que ocurrió el incendio.

El jefe de Gobierno porteño, Mauricio Macri, confirmó esta mañana que "en pocas semanas más" la calle Bartolomé Mitre al 3000 será reabierta al tránsito. Esa arteria lleva más de tres años cerrada al paso de vehículos, desde la noche en que se produjo la tragedia de Cromañón.

"La calle sigue cerrada, pero estamos hablando con los padres (de las víctimas del incendio) y en semanas más se va a abrir", afirmó Macri en declaraciones a Radio 10.

El funcionario explicó que esa calle del barrio porteño de Once "es clave para el tránsito" en la zona. Por ello, dijo que la vice-jefa de Gobierno de la Ciudad, Gabriela Michetti, "está con el tema".

"En los heridos hay consenso de que hay que dar una solución al tema", afirmó el jefe Comunal. En este sentido, agregó que la "mayoría" de los familiares de las víctimas de la tragedia "está de acuerdo" con la reapertura de la calle."

Part of Bartolomé Mitre street will be reopened in a couple of months. Mayor of Buenos Aires, Mauricio Macro has told this to the press after consulting family members of the victims of the Cromañon Disco fire of December 2004. This part of the street is a key road in Once district.

This fire was a major distaster in the city, rocking the city and nation which took place just before New Years in 2004. I remember i was there in my second month and the sound of ambulances kept going for a long time. Much went on after regarding the question of guilt.

At this moment the street is covered with memories of the tragediy. U will find some images and articles if u use search for "Once" or "Plaza Miserere" on top of this page.

Short tango movie

Made on my first weekend there (last weekend of March '08). You often find this on busy Florida street downtown but this one was taken on Plaza San Martin. Of course u can take a cab there but if u wanna do it more as it is done there u can either take the subway to Retiro (Linea C). When u get out of the railway station it's already visible on the right in the distance. Or when u start on Plaza the Mayo u walk passed the Cathedral (the large building with the huge columns) and follow that street until Florida starts on ur right. From the cathedral that's bout 200-300 mtrs. Walk all the way through Retiro. U will cross some major avenues on the way and have to get passed the "muggers'" who try to lure u with tickets and clubs (very annoying). That is a reason why i avoid Florida mostly because they smell ur a tourist :p. At the end of Florida is a little square and when u cross the street u get to the park. And this movie was made just across that street.

Too bad it has no sound.

Ghostly Recoleta Cementary

Now that was a pain to make. The movie was too large and too long (12.38 min) for Youtube so i had to work around. The advantage is that u get 640 x 480 resolution. Nice and big :) I hope it doesn't draw too much resources on ur pc! Disadvantage is that i can't display it directly in here. I simply don't know how to do it. :p It did run smoother with IE instead of Firefox in this case.

Nothing paranormal went on yet for fun i tried to add some world famous ghost images to my existing ones. In this movie there are 5 pics which contain ghosts. Can u find them?

The movie ends with images from the tomb of Eva (Evita) Perón. also there is one image edited. Not a ghost image but it looks like one.

Before Evita was laid to rest there is quite a story before that. She has been buried in Milan, Italy during the dictatorship which overthrew her husband Juan Perón in 1955. Basically her body was missing for 16 years until the dictatorship revealed the Milan location. Before that time she had been embalmed and displayed in a Lenin like fashion in Buenos Aires. In 1971 she was exhumed in Milan and flown to Spain where Juan Perón lived at that time. He kept her in his house until he returned to Argentina in 1974. However he did not take her with her. It was Isabel Perón who became the first female president to get Evita's body back to Argentina where she was buried in the world famous tomb.

El humo : The smoke

It may have hit ur news channel as well. Buenos Aires and other parts of Argentina are dealing with severe smoke problems due to, you could say, an escalation in the dragging agricultural dispute. Traffic is effected, the local airport operates with delays, Ezeiza Intl Airport is said to operate normally because so far it has been lucky to be situated on the right side of the fires causing the smoke. Change in wind direction could alter that. Also the subway has problems with it. And also the major routes leading into the city. The smoke reaches even into Uruguay, the neighboring country which is just at close distance from Buenos Aires on the East.

What i heard from someone there it seems to be quite unbearable. And dangerous due to elevated levels of carbon monoxide. If u have respiratory illnesses like asthma it's even harder u can imagine.

Tourism is affected as well. Also some schools have been suspended. and also on the webcams u can see the haze from the smoke.

Caos total por el humo que invade diferentes ciudades del país

"Smoke blanketed the Argentine capital on Friday as brush fires apparently set deliberately consumed thousands of acres in the provinces of Buenos Aires and Entre Ríos.

The smoke, from about 300 fires, is blamed for at least two fatal traffic accidents this week that left eight people dead.

Sections of major highways and the Buenos Aires port, among the busiest in the world, have been closed. Incoming flights to the city's domestic airport, Jorge Newbery Airpark, have been diverted.

The Argentine government has blamed farmers looking to clear their land for crops and grazing for the fires, which are estimated to cover 173,000 acres (70,000 hectares ).

"This is the largest fire of this kind that we've ever seen," Argentine Interior Minister Florencio Randazzo said Thursday.

Randazzo called the situation a "disaster."

As of Friday morning, little progress had been made extinguishing the blazes.

No rain is predicted for the next few days, but the National Meteorological Service predicts the winds will change direction soon, dispersing the smoke.

On Friday morning, the National Roads Administration closed sections of the heavily traveled Panamericana Highway, which leads in and out of Buenos Aires. Spokesman Ernesto Arriaga said "visibility is 5 meters" (about 16 feet) in some sections of the highway.

"Covering highways with smoke just to clear a field of weeds is unforgivable," Cabinet Chief Alberto Fernandez said in a recent interview with Radio Diez. "It's incredibly irresponsible."

Hospitals have reported an increase in visitors complaining of breathing problems, sore throats and burning eyes in the past three days.

Citing a high level of carbon monoxide in the air, officials have encouraged people not to exercise outside.

Schools in Pilar, a city in the province of Buenos Aires, were closed Friday because of the gray, thick air.

The smoke has obscured views of some of the capital's landmarks, such the Obelisco monument and the government house, Casa Rosada, and people were seen walking on the city streets covering their faces with clothes.

Earlier this month, Argentina's farmers suspended a three-week strike over a new government export tax on commodities.

The bitter lockout left grocery shelves empty and caused major friction between President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner's government and Argentina's large agricultural sector."

Buenos aires: Day 0: Ezeiza arrival

To start at the beginning of the trip:

This is for the flying freaks like me. Arrival at Ezeiza Intl Airport, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

I basically started filming over Uruguay. You see overview of Buenos Aires. Also Palomar airport can be seen (that is if u can in this small Youtube format :p)

We made some turns giving some nice view of the surrounding areas.

Also extending the flaps etc can be seen nicely.

Only one thing happened. Obviously i had my finger too close to the Stop button, so when we touched down it stoped filming. Took me a bit to realize unfortunately. Ending with some taxiing towards the gate.

Webcam image from the other side

You all may have seen the webcam images on the site here. I went to one of those places to make a picture. First u get the webcam image and then one of mine. If u look at the webcam image u can see maybe the subway exit. The pic i made is taken at that spot more or less facing into the direction of the left hand corner on the bottom. This is also a place where often the webcam is pointed. So check it regularly. When it has changed positions u can see the exact same stores.

It is the intersection Av.Pueyrredón y Av. Rivadavia where Plaza Miserere or Plaza Once is. The subway exit u see (on the Plaza itself) is from Linea A which runs from East to West starting at Plaza de Mayo in Caballito. Soon it will run upto Av. Nazca in Flores. Linea H is also starting there (for now) running North - South.

I also made a 12 second movie but that isn't ready yet. Will post that later.

Time is up

Returned yesterday. Haven't posted for some days. Wanted to live the last days there fully without having to do anything else. It sucks to leave there every time. When i went this time i wanted to see how i felt returning after almost 9 months. As a tourist this time. But actually it doesn't matter. It will always feel home. A place i will want to go with some regularity. It never felt as a vacation place but as a place where i belong. I don't even know if that makes any sense.

I didn't make as much pics and movies as i wanted. Now that i think about that it is because it doesn't do justice to that feeling of being here. It would be a mere distorted reflection of an experience.

Do i regret leaving last June? As for the reason why i went then no. Leaving this time was more intense actually. Because i realized how much i had missed it and had come passed the reason for the actual leaving back then.

The last days specifically i took in all the sounds and images and smells. And when i close my eyes i can still see it and hear it. The sounds of steps on the pavement, the brush of air against ur skin. Maybe u know what i mean.

Joseph Brodsky wrote once: “No matter under what circumstances you leave it, home does not cease to be home. No matter how you lived there: well or poorly.”

It is a circumzenithal arc (CZA) formed not by raindrops but by ice crystals drifting in high, freezing clouds. "CZAs are the most beautiful of all the ice halos," declares atmospheric optics expert Les Cowley. "The first sighting is always a surprise, an ethereal rainbow fled from its watery origins and wrapped improbably about the zenith. It is often described as an 'upside down rainbow' by first timers."

The best time to see a CZA is when the sun is fairly low. "Look straight up especially if sundogs are visible," advises Cowley. "The center of the bow always sunwards and red is on the outside."

Meteor Storms

Each generation seems to get a chance, or two, to see a mind-boggling display of shooting stars one night. The most spectacular displays in my memory are the 1999 and 2001 Leonid storms. Before my time, observers swore by the 1966 Leonids, and could not stop talking about the spectacular 1933 and 1946 Draconid storms. Those were not quite as intense as the Leonids, but the Draconids moved so slowly that several were seen gliding across the sky at the same time.

In the 19th century, the most spectacular storms were the 1872 and 1885 Andromedids, which were almost as strong as the Draconids and also very slow moving. At the time, Chinese astronomers wrote: "shooting stars fell like rain." From the counts of meteors in the west, we now estimate that rates peaked around two per second.

Some years earlier, in 1846, a comet called 3D/Biela had been observed to break into at least two pieces. The pieces had drifted further apart in 1852. Based on the rate of that drift, the moment of breakup is thought to have been in either 1842 or early 1843, when the comet was far from the sun, near Jupiter's orbit. Because of their phenomenal intensity, the Andromedid storms were believed to be caused by Earth traveling through the debris created during that breakup.

So, did we pass through the breakup debris of comet 3D/Biela? Astronomer Jeremie Vaubaillon, now at Caltech, and I decided to investigate. We calculated where the debris from 1842/43 would have ended up in the comet orbit and discovered that a breakup far from the sun does not disperse dust easily. The dust tends to keep the same orbital period, returning back at the same time. The cloud of dust tends to hang around the position of the comet, only gradually lagging the comet as a whole due to the push of solar radiation.

We concluded that Earth has never encountered the debris created during the 1842/1843 breakup! So what caused the Andromedid meteor storms? Upon further reflection, we calculated that Earth had passed through the dust trails that were generated when the two fragments came back towards the sun in 1846 and 1852. Ejection close to the sun results in higher ejection speeds and thus a relatively large variation of orbital periods. After one orbit, some dust returns early, other dust late, and thus all dust spreads out along the comet orbit much more quickly. We found that the planets happened to steer those new dust trails into Earth's path every time when observers on the ground noticed unusual Andromedid rates in later years.

What if Earth would have crossed the dense cloud of debris of the broken comet shortly after 1843? The resulting meteor storm would have been a hundred times more intense, if not more. The impressive storms of 1872 and 1885 were caused by a tiny bit of dust, we estimate 30 times less than what came off during the initial breakup. Moreover, that dust had spread out quite a bit. Just imagine what could have been. We appear to have missed out on a truly spectacular sight.

Then again, the next generation may be in for a surprise. The Andromedids have moved on and now pass far from Earth's orbit, but other comets continue to break and create new meteoroid streams. One date to keep in mind is May 31, 2022, when Earth will pass very close to (but perhaps will just miss) debris created during the 1995 breakup of comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3. And there may be others; we don't know yet what dormant comet nuclei may be out there that could break any time now.

Cleopatra's Suicide by Snake a Myth?

Popular lore holds that in Cleopatra's last moments, the distraught queen -- who had just lost her kingdom and learned of her lover's demise -- smuggled a poisonous snake into her locked chamber and died, along with two ladies-in-waiting, of a self-inflicted snake bite.

Such a scenario is next to impossible, according to Egyptologist Joyce Tyldesley, who shatters the "snakebite suicide" myth in her new book, Cleopatra: Last Queen of Egypt, just published in Europe and slated for an upcoming U.S. release.

"It seems to me that the snake theory is just too difficult to sustain, as it leaves too many loopholes," Tyldesley, a lecturer at the University of Manchester in England and museum fellow, told Discovery News.

She posed the following questions: Do we imagine one snake killed all three women, or were three snakes brought in? How did the snake(s) get into the room? Where did the snakes then go? Since not all snakes are poisonous, how did the women ensure their own deaths?

"Basically, I think there are better and more reliable ways of killing oneself," she said, adding that some elements of the story are probably true.

Based on a number of historical accounts, Cleopatra did die in Alexandria at around 30 B.C., and there is no historical evidence of a prior illness. The moments leading up to her death are also plausible to Tyldesley, particularly Cleopatra's dismissal of her servants, save for two women, Charmian and Eiras.

"The decision to die in front of her female servants made good practical sense, as even the dead (according to ancient Egyptian spiritual beliefs) needed a chaperone," she explained.

"One of the horrors of female suicide was that the body might be glimpsed partially naked, by strangers," she added. The queen therefore safeguarded her virtue in life and in death by retaining the company of her ladies-in-waiting.

In accounts written about by the Greek historian Plutarch and the Roman historian Cassius Dio, Cleopatra had a snake smuggled into her chamber inside a jar of figs or water, but both historians expressed doubts about the scenario.

Tyldesley said the most likely snake would have been an Egyptian cobra, which, while slender, can grow up to 6 feet in length.

"An adult cobra, or three, would have needed an exceptionally large fig basket or water jar," she wrote.

She believes instead that Cleopatra and her servants died of self-administered poison, which might have been smuggled into the room or worn on the queen in a pin or hair comb. One of Cleopatra's uncles committed suicide by ingesting poison; death by suicide was seen as a virtue in the Greek tradition her family practiced.

Cleopatra might have "chosen to die on her own terms rather than wait to be killed or humiliated by Octavian," who defeated Antony and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium and later became the Roman Emperor Augustus, said Tyldesley.

Some researchers even believe Octavian murdered Cleopatra. U.S. criminal profiler Pat Brown took on the case in 2004 and approached it as she would investigate a 21st century death.

Brown also found flaws in the snakebite scenario. With the help of University College London Egyptologist Nicole Douek and Oxford University professor David Warrell, she came to the conclusion that Octavian "sent his men in to do the job" and then made it look like suicide.

Tyldesley agrees Octavian would have "wanted Cleopatra dead, although the argument that he wished to end the troublesome Ptolemaic line once and for all holds little water when we consider that he spared the lives of three of Cleopatra's children and allowed Cleopatra's daughter to marry and have children of her own."

As for the snake myth, Tyldesley thinks it arose because the Egyptians feared, respected and worshipped snakes. Cleopatra might have therefore worn a crown with a snake depicted on it, which artists latched onto, perhaps with too much fervor.

"Later artists picked up on the royal Egyptian snake idea and ran with it...fuelling speculation that she died by snakebite," said Tyldesley.

Intact Colossus of Egypt's Queen Tiye Found

This intact statue of Queen Tiye, a powerful queen from ancient Egypt's 18th dynasty, was recently discovered at the site of the mortuary temple of powerful pharaoh Amenhotep III, as seen in this photograph taken March 27, 2008.

The 12-foot-tall (3.6-meter-tall) quartzite figure was found attached to the broken-off leg of a much larger colossus—a 50-foot-tall (15-meter-tall) likeness of Amenhotep III seated at his throne.

Experts said the statue is one of the best preserved at the site, ancient Egypt's largest temple complex that most believe was decimated in antiquity by massive earthquakes.

Buenos aires: Day 6

Ok, having some probs with the laptop. Had constant heat shutdowns and by checking it seems the cooling fan is kinda coming to it's end. Every time the machine starts i have to see if it comes on and sometimes help it a little cranking it up. Let's hope it will hold.

Today much was closed. Malvinas Day i believe. yesterday was for Recoleta Cementary. Made pic and movies and already got to editing it and making it ready for Youtube. Approx 5.5 minutes. Uploading it will have to wait after i get back. Upload speed is rather crappy here.

Regarding the Subway. I found out that Line A is still ending at Primera Junta. They are getting the stations ready up to the last one called: Nazca. Linea H, the yellow one, seems to be working. i Still haven't tried it. Will do that for sure.

Still planned: La Boca and more special Caminito. When u say that u say Tango. Also wanna go to Plaza Dorrego (more tango) and also wanna visit a Tango Club hopefully this weekend.

Also still need to buy clothes at Once. Was there but couldn't find something really. Need to try again.

Buenos aires: Day 4 : Subway

In 9 months quite some progress has been made on the Subway net. I have posted about it before. H - line (Yellow) is now almost (if not completely) done creating a second North - South connection crossing other already existing lines cutting short on travel time for a lot of people.

Line A (the oldest) which before stopped at Primera Junta has now been extended. I think u can travel up to Avenida Carabobo right now. Some stations are still in the making as the one i'm looking at right now: Plaza Flores. But above ground it seems pretty much done. I don't think it will take too long for that to complete.

There was another line i think P - line. I will have to check that out. So more about that later.

Buenos aires: Day 4 : Prices in general

O yes, the prices have increased. For example bus and subway. Bus used to be 80 Centavos and is now 1 Peso. The Subway was 70 Centavos and is now 90 Centavos. The coffee I'm having right now (Doble expresso) is 6.5 Pesos. And that is not downtown. U easily pay 10 pesos there.

Other prices have increased too. Inflation, Also a not so good Dollar - Peso rate. When i was still here they always kept it around 3 Pesos for 1 US $. That couldn't be kept.

All in all if u live here and don't see ur income rise u have a harder time for an already hard time for most. For me familiar shops have closed as well. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Beautiful weather again. Went to the city so far. Made a nice video of tango dancers in Plaza San Martin. Needs some editing and uploading. So as said later.

Now enjoying lunch at the same spot as yesterday. Only place to have a reasonable connection that i found.

For the night not sure yet. Yesterday night i went downtown and obviously found prices to be very expensive. I paid 14 pesos for a glass of beer. That's 3 US $ or a little less in Euro's. So i wanna see to hang out in the neighborhood. Plenty of places here too.

Study shows life was tough for ancient Egyptians

"CAIRO, March 28 (Reuters Life!) - New evidence of a sick, deprived population working under harsh conditions contradicts earlier images of wealth and abundance from the art records of the ancient Egyptian city of Tell el-Amarna, a study has found.

Tell el-Amarna was briefly the capital of ancient Egypt during the reign of the pharaoh Akhenaten, who abandoned most of Egypt's old gods in favour of the Aten sun disk and brought in a new and more expressive style of art.

Akhenaten, who ruled Egypt between 1379 and 1362 BC, built and lived in Tell el-Amarna in central Egypt for 15 years. The city was largely abandoned shortly after his death and the ascendance of the famous boy king Tutankhamun to the throne.

Studies on the remains of ordinary ancient Egyptians in a cemetery in Tell el-Amarna showed that many of them suffered from anaemia, fractured bones, stunted growth and high juvenile mortality rates, according to professors Barry Kemp and Gerome Rose, who led the research.

Rose, a professor of anthropology in the University of Arkansas in the United States, said adults buried in the cemetery were probably brought there from other parts of Egypt.

"This means that we have a period of deprivation in Egypt prior to the Amarna phase," he told an audience of archaeologists and Egyptologists in Cairo on Thursday evening.

"So maybe things were not so good for the average Egyptian and maybe Akhenaten said we have to change to make things better," he said.

Kemp, director of the Amarna Project which seeks in part to increase public knowledge of Tell el-Amarna and surrounding region, said little attention has been given to the cemeteries of ordinary ancient Egyptians.

"A very large number of ordinary cemeteries have been excavated but just for the objects and very little attention has been paid for the human remain," he told Reuters.

"The idea of treating the human remains ... to study the overall health of the population is relatively new."

Paintings in the tombs of the nobles show an abundance of offerings, but the remains of ordinary people tell a different story.

Rose displayed pictures showing spinal injuries among teenagers, probably because of accidents during construction work to build the city.

The study showed that anaemia ran at 74 percent among children and teenagers, and at 44 percent among adults, Rose said. The average height of men was 159 cm (5 feet 2 inches) and 153 cm among women.

"Adult heights are used as a proxy for overall standard of living," he said. "Short statures reflect a diet deficient in protein. ... People were not growing to their full potential."

Kemp said he believed further excavations in Tell el-Amarna would "firm-up" the conclusions of his team.

"We are seeing a more realistic picture of what life was like," he told Reuters. "It has nothing to do with the intentions of Akhenaten, which may have been good and paternal toward his people." (Writing by Alaa Shahine, editing by Mary Gabriel)"

Nefertiti's tomb found?

Nefertiti's Tomb found? Sensational discovery in the Egyptian Valley of the Kings! Once again, a new tomb was discovered underneath the desert sands, as reported by the German-language MYSTERIES Magazine in its next newsstand issue.

So far, the Egyptian Department of the Antiquities has kept silent about the exact location of this discovery. As MYSTERIES has now revealed exclusively on its webpage, the tomb, which was discovered in November 2007, is allegedly located in very close vicinity of King Meren-Ptah (KV 8). Could it be the last resting space of Ramesses VIII? Hardly, because the discovery appears to be a "stepped entrance" which points to a significant Amarna Ruler Tomb from the 18th Dynasty - possibly even to the legendary and elusive last resting place of Pharaoh Akhenaten or his wife Nefertiti!

Well about to head out finally. This will be my last post from home for awhile. Obviously i will depend heavily on wireless and WiFi for the coming weeks to get on and hence to make posts. There will be a lot to post but most will be after i get back due to data restrictions. Everyone knows how large it can get if u upload a lot of pictures.

What i wanna try to do if i get a chance is to post on the move. I do have a stop-over in Milan. We'll see! W00t!!

As for now weather forecast for here, stop-over and arrival is good. No delays at this moment. Got the BB loaded with good music so i don't have to be bored :))

Nope not the movie :) One day of work left. Most is packed. And again u pack more than u need. Sounds familiar? Checklist is almost completed. What is left is last-minute stuff. The things u use until the last moment. For the rest remain making backups of files to keep here just in case. Will keep backing up on a USB stick while there. Encrypted of course. U never know what can happen. Not that i have to hide anything. It's just the idea that someone can read ur mail etc. In that sense i do better than the Dutch military. They had a bad track record of USB sticks being lost, unencrypted. *shakes head*.

Weather looks "good" in both Amsterdam and Milan, so no delays expected. The current weather forecast for day of arrival is partially clouded with 23 Celsius (15 C at night) according to the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional.

And guess what? While packing i found 22 pesos! I can buy an ice cream (or 2, or 3, 4??)! Yay! :p And i know just the place for that: Palmeiras at the intersection of Pedernera and Bonifacio. Hmmm! Best ice cream i ever had. And better, 1/1/2 blocks from the hotel :D

It commemorates the victims of the military dictatorship known as the National Reorganization Process. It is held on this day because it marks the anniversary of the rise of the dictatorship back in 1976.

You may notice it this year on March 29th '08 between 8 and 9 pm if u are in some major cities in the world. Earth Hour, which means many will turn off the lights for an hour in order to help reduce global warning. Melbourne, Brisbane, San Francisco, Manila, Chicago and others will join.

I'll be in Buenos Aires. I wonder if they join as well. I can't find anything when i look for it.

Looking for sun?

While a lot are still buried in snow there are some who watch the sun. It is supposedly a boring time to watch the sun since it's the low point in the 11 year activity cycle of the sun. But there was something to watch with Easter. When Katrina hit in 2005 the sun was supposed to be quiet as well. Coincidence? In August '06 when i read back space.com reported the start of the new cycle. That would make it '11 - '12 for the peak of activity. Hmm, 2012... wasn't that when the Ancient Mayan calender ended? Theories, theories...

Record Breaking Gamma Ray Burst

Astronomers are familiar with seeing amazing things through their telescopes. But nothing prepared them for an incredible explosion detected early Wednesday morning by NASA’s Swift satellite. At 2:12 a.m. EDT, Swift detected an explosion from deep space that was so powerful that its afterglow was briefly visible to the naked eye. Even more astonishing, the explosion itself took place halfway across the visible universe!

Never before has anything so far away come even close to naked-eye visibility. The explosion was so far away that it took its light 7,500,000,000 (7.5 billion) years to reach Earth! In fact, the explosion took place so long ago that Earth had not yet come into existence.

"No other known object or type of explosion could be seen by the naked eye at such an immense distance," says Swift science team member Stephen Holland of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "We don’t know yet if anyone was looking at the afterglow at the time it brightened to peak visibility. But if someone just happened to be looking at the right place at the right time, they saw the most distant object ever seen by human eyes without optical aid."

If you venture out to a remote location and gaze into the sky on a dark, moonless night, the farthest object you can see with your naked eye is a spiral galaxy called M33. The galaxy is far away by Earthly standards, but it is nearby on a cosmic distant scale. The light from M33 takes 2,900,000 (2.9 million) years to reach Earth, making it thousands of times closer than the March 19 explosion.

The explosion itself is called a gamma ray burst, since much of the explosion’s energy was in the form of gamma rays. A gamma ray is a type of light with energy far higher than the light we see with our eyes. Most gamma ray bursts originate when huge stars die and explode. Instead of blowing material in all directions, they channel an incredible amount of energy into two high-speed jets, like turbocharged cosmic blowtorches.

When these jets plow into surrounding clouds of gas, they light up the gas, generating an afterglow that can be seen by telescopes in space and on Earth. The afterglows generally get fairly bright, but never before has an afterglow been visible to the naked eye. The March 19 gamma ray burst’s afterglow was bright enough for about 30 seconds that someone could have seen it without a telescope or binoculars.

"Even by the standards of gamma-ray bursts, this burst was a whopper," says Swift lead scientist Neil Gehrels of NASA Goddard. "It blows away every gamma ray burst we’ve seen so far."

Astronomers have just begun their scientific analysis of the burst, so they do not know yet why it was so powerful, and why the afterglow was so much brighter than other afterglows. Perhaps the burst itself was more energetic than other bursts, or perhaps its jets were very narrow, and were aimed directly at Earth.

Swift normally detects about two gamma ray bursts per week. But March 19 was a special day. The satellite detected four bursts on that day, which is a Swift record for one day. “Coincidentally, the passing of Arthur C. While i type this in another screen i see tn.com.ar (Argentine TV web). They are expecting severe weather. Thunderstorm, strong winds and hail. The skies are incredibly dark. U can see the lightning going. I hope for them it's not going to be a repeat of beginning of the months when they had floods. They give out a warning about power lines and trees even. If u look at the weather radar on the lower right of this page u can see what's coming. Good I'm not there yet! One week to go!

And in the meantime we here in The Netherlands are expecting a White Easter. OMG. Anyway i have to start packing for next week. Good reason to stay inside.

Hubble Finds First Organic Molecule on an Exoplanet

"Scientists have detected the presence of an organic molecule in the atmosphere of an extrasolar planet for the first time, NASA announced today.

The finding, detailed in the March 20 issue of the journal Nature, marks a breakthrough in the attempt to detect signs of life on planets beyond our solar system.

The tell-tale signature of the molecule methane in the atmosphere of the Jupiter-sized planet HD 189733b was made by the Hubble Space Telescope's Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) in May 2007.

MIT's Sara Seager, who was not involved with the study, said that she is "cautiously optimistic that the methane detection is robust" at a press conference announcing the finding.

It is thought that under the right circumstances, methane can play a key role in prebiotic chemistry, or the chemical reactions considered necessary to produce life as we know it on Earth.

So the Hubble observations of HD 189733b, which is likely too hot to support life, "is a dress rehearsal for future searches for life on more hospitable planets," said study team member Mark Swain of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California.

Methane, composed of carbon and hydrogen, has been detected on most planets in our solar system, but never before on a world orbiting another star.

On a smaller, more hospitable planet, methane could be indicative of biological activity, though methane can be produced by non-biological processes. Methane generally breaks up quickly in Earth's atmosphere through chemical reactions; this same process could occur on other small planets. And on a small planet, the hydrogen from the broken-up methane would likely escape quickly to space. So if a high amount of methane is detected on an Earth-sized planet, it could be the result of biological processes, because non-biological processes tend not to produce large amounts of the molecule. Astronomers plan to use the James Webb Telescope to search for water and methane on other extrasolar planets.

On Earth, methane is one of the main components of natural gas and is produced by termites, wetland environments, waste landfills and even livestock.

It is unlikely that HD 189733b, located 63 light-years away in the constellation Vulpecula, harbors life. Although about the size of Jupiter, the planet orbits closer to its star than the innermost planet in our solar system, Mercury. This close proximity to its sun means the planet's atmosphere swelters at a temperature of about 900 degrees Celsius, the melting point of silver.

"The planet's atmosphere is far too hot for even the hardiest life to survive — at least the kind of life we know from Earth. It's highly unlikely that cows could survive here!" said researcher Giovanna Tinetti of the University College London and the European Space Agency.

The NICMOS observations also confirmed the presence of water molecules in the planet's atmosphere, originally detected by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope in 2007."

Well, after a Microsoft post a Mac related one :) Apple came with an update of their Safari browser which is the standard browser if u run Mac. It is also available for Windows. And i must say it's a lot quicker than the Firefox one I'm normally using. So I'm gonna test a bit. All the regular plugins are also available like Flash, Quicktime, Java, Windows Media etc.

Windows Vista SP1 Released to Windows Update

Well it's finally there. The first Service Pack from Windows Vista. For now only in English, German, Spanish, French and Japanese. Other languages are expected soon. The SP1 is available both in the 32 and 64 bit versions.

Parallax

Crepuscular Rays

You probably all saw something similar. It makes amazing images like this one below from Stow Lake in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.

These are Crepuscular Rays.

"Crepuscular rays, in atmospheric optics, also known as sun rays or God's rays, are rays of sunlight that appear to radiate from a single point in the sky. These rays, which stream through gaps in clouds, are diverging columns of sunlit air separated by darker cloud-shadowed regions. The name comes from their frequent occurrences during twilight, when the contrasts between light and dark are the most obvious. Various airborne compounds scatter the sunlight and make these rays visible. We see the light so defined because of diffraction, reflection and scattering.

Crepuscular rays are near-parallel, but appear to diverge because of linear perspective. They often occur when objects such as mountain peaks or clouds partially shadow the sun's rays like a cloud cover. Three main forms of crepuscular rays are:

* Rays of light penetrating holes in low clouds (also called "Jacob's Ladder").
* Beams of light diverging from behind a cloud.
* Pale, pinkish or reddish rays that radiate from below the horizon. These are often mistaken for light pillars.

The rays of the second and third types, in some cases, may extend across the sky and appear to converge at the antisolar point, which is the point on the sky sphere directly opposite the sun, and they are called anticrepuscular rays. Like crepuscular rays, they are parallel shafts of sunlight from holes in the clouds, and their apparently odd directions are a perspective effect.

Crepuscular and anticrepuscular rays behave in the same way. Crepuscular rays are usually red or yellow in appearance because the atmosphere acts as a giant lens, refracting low sunset rays into long curved paths passing through up to 40 times as much air than the rays from a high midday sun. Particles in the air scatter short wavelength blue and green rays much more strongly than longer wavelength yellow and red.

Crepuscular rays can also occasionally be viewed underwater, particularly in arctic areas appearing from ice shelfs or cracks in the ice.

Semana Santa: St. Patricks Day

Into Semana Santa or Holy Week. In Argentina that means that Thursday and Friday are holidays for most. In the Netherlands we don't have those days off but we get the Monday after Easter which is called 2nd Easter Day (free translation).

Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday (yesterday). Then Holy Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. and finally Easter Sunday.

St. Patricks Day? What's that? In The Netherlands ask around and i guarantee u 90% doesn't know what it means. Some may have heard the name. So what is it? It's celebrated in many countries around the world.

"Saint Patrick's Day (Irish: Lá ’le Pádraig or Lá Fhéile Pádraig), colloquially St. Paddy's Day or Paddy's Day, is an annual feast day which celebrates Saint Patrick (circa 385–461 AD), one of the patron saints of Ireland, and is generally celebrated on March 17. The day is the national holiday of Ireland. It is a bank holiday in Northern Ireland and a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Montserrat, and the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. In the rest of Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States and New Zealand, it is widely celebrated but is not an official holiday. Celebration in Argentina:

People dance and drink only beer throughout the night, until seven or eight in the morning, and although the tradition of mocking those who do not does not exist, most people would wear something green. In Buenos Aires, the party is held in downtown street Reconquista, where there are several Irish pubs; in 2006, there were 50,000 people in this street and the pubs nearby. Curiously enough, the street is named that way ("Reconquest") remembering the takeover of the city after it had been invaded by the British in 1806, and much of the popularity of the day is due to the Argentine animosity against Great Britain (and thus, sympathy towards the Irish). Neither the Catholic Church nor the Irish community, the fifth largest in the world outside Ireland, take part in the organization of the parties."

Vacation just got cheaper

Today a new record in exchange rates between Euro and US Dollar. 1 Euro = 1.55 US$ The rate between the Euro and Argentine Peso is today 4.94 ARS per Euro. When i left Argentina last June it was around 4.0.

The US$ was at a rate of 3.17 ARS today. That rate was around 3.0 in June '07. So more Pesos for ur buck!

Downside is that Argentina has seen significant increases in prices in the same period since June '07. So there u loose again some.

If ur a real fan u know the meaning of the text of the last one. For those who don't know what i mean: It was from Season one when they investigated Eastern State Penitentiary for the first time. Something freaked Brian and he came running out in view of the cams yelling "Dude run!" I guess that will haunt him for the rest of his life. And one haunting which can't be debunked either :) The phrase became so popular there is an actual website duderun.com LMAO.

Real Death Star Could Strike Earth

"A beautiful pinwheel in space might one day blast Earth with death rays, scientists now report.

Unlike the moon-sized Death Star from Star Wars, which has to get close to a planet to blast it, this blazing spiral has the potential to burn worlds from thousands of light-years away.

"I used to appreciate this spiral just for its beautiful form, but now I can't help a twinge of feeling that it is uncannily like looking down a rifle barrel," said researcher Peter Tuthill, an astronomer at the University of Sydney.

The fiery pinwheel in space in question has at its heart a pair of hot, luminous stars locked in orbit with each other. As they circle one another, plumes of streaming gas driven from the surfaces of the stars collide in the intervening space, eventually becoming entangled and twisted into a whirling spiral by the orbits of the stars."

The weeks of confusion start again for travellers and those who interact a lot online. What time is it there? What the difference is today on hours may be different next week.

Here is a summary of some DST times (Daylight Savings) vovering most viewers.

-The US switched last weekend (March 9th) setting the clocks one hour ahead.
-Argentina has currently DST which will end (Southern Hemisphere) March 16th. (Clock goes back one hour)
-Most of Europe will go to DST on March 26th. (Also ahead one hour)
-Australia ends DST on March 30th or April 6th depending in which territory u live.

Getting there

Less than 20 days to go. I'm all set. Everything is arranged. Will stay in a hotel where i was before, close to where i lived. Only 840 Pesos for 14 nights. But that's twice the price i paid back then. 840 is for some there a month salary or more. But compare it with other prices of 100 US $ or more per night! Then I'd say I'm done pretty cheap. No breakfast though but i know some places and café con medialunas are not expensive. And it leaves more money for hanging out in the evenings.

All that's left is packing basically. Also not much work since i go with little to be able to come back with a suitcase full. So just counting down for now. 12 days of work left before then. Do have to buy some presents before leaving. I'm thinking to do that the next weekend.

I did find a nice app for my BB. Worldmate Live. It allows u to make itineraries. Also u can see the weather and times in various cities of ur choice. And they have a Gold Membership which allows u to get up-to-date travel status, delays, changes etc. It's free to try for 7 days so I'll activate that trial just before i travel. It even should give options to rebook in case of cancellation, saving u queuing at airline desks. let's hope i won't need that option!

SL: Was on a bit. I'm still backlogging on TV shows but almost done. So i expect to be on a bit more. Gotta find something new to do in game.

More rings in Saturn's neighborhood

Saturn's moon Rhea could be a mini version of its ringed parent and the first moon known to have rings of its own.

Scientists detected hints of the rings when the Cassini spacecraft flew by the moon, Saturn's second largest, in November 2005.

Surprisingly, instruments aboard Cassini measured an absence of electrons around the moon where astronomers expected the charged particles to swarm.

"This showed that there was something unique going on," said Geraint Jones, a Cassini scientist. "We haven't seen anything like this at any of the other moons. The only thing we can come up with that fits what we see is that maybe there is some debris around Rhea. If it is correct this would be the first moon where we have evidence of rings."

Since Rhea lies within Saturn's magnetosphere, which traps ions and electrons, scientists expected the moon to be awash in these particles. Instead, they measured a gap in electrons in a swath of space surrounding Rhea.

A set of rings could explain the disappearing electrons because the material making up the rings — most likely chunks of water ice up to a centimeter or meter in diameter — would absorb electrons.

Rhea, named after the classical Greek titan goddess, the mother of Zeus, Hades, Hera and other Olympian deities, is a barren, icy world covered in craters. Its diameter is a little less than half that of our moon.

So far, Cassini has not been able to see the rings. If the spacecraft's mission is extended, the researchers hope it might glimpse them on a future close flyby of Rhea.

Saturn has dozens of moons; to date, 52 of them have been named.

Aurora spring

Spring is usually the time for the Northern Lights like the one below.

So why Spring? Here is an explanation from NASA:

"It turns out that magnetic connections between the sun and Earth are favored in springtime. It’s a matter of geometry: As Earth goes around in its orbit, Earth’s magnetic poles wobble back and forth. (The poles don’t really wobble, but the combination of Earth’s 23-degree polar tilt plus orbital motion makes the poles seem wobble from the solar point of view.) Around the time of the equinox, Earth’s magnetic field is best oriented for “connecting-up” with the sun, opening the door for solar wind energy to flow in and spark Northern Lights.

But wait, there are two equinoxes, spring and fall, with similar magnetic geometry. Indeed, autumn is aurora season, too. Geomagnetic disturbances are almost twice as likely in spring-fall versus winter-summer, according to historical records."
